Recognizing the early signs of vision changes is the first step toward maintaining healthy eyesight. Often, our eyes try to compensate for blurry vision in ways that cause discomfort or habit changes. Here are four common signs that it might be time to schedule an eye exam.
1. Frequent headaches after reading or screen time
Your eyes overwork to compensate for blurry vision, straining the surrounding muscles. This causes tension headaches — often felt behind the eyes or across the forehead.
2. Squinting constantly to see clearly
Squinting temporarily changes the shape of your eye to improve focus. If you find yourself doing it often — at screens, signs, or in class — your eyes are sending you a signal that they need corrective help.
3. Sitting closer to screens or the TV
Moving closer reduces the effort your eyes need to focus on distant objects. If you or your child naturally drift closer to screens, it's a strong early sign of myopia (nearsightedness) developing.
4. Difficulty seeing clearly at night
Struggling to see in low light — especially while driving — is an early sign of several conditions including cataracts and Vitamin A deficiency. Don't brush it off as simple tiredness.
